Jupiter Hospital transplant team created history by performing the First Pediatric Living Donor Small Intestinal Transplant in Country. Team led by Dr. Gaurav Chaubal and others.
10 year old child who lost his entire small intestine 3 months back after developing bowel gangrene as a sequelae of COVID infection. He underwent multiple surgeries in a period of last 3 months related to complications arising from his intestinal gangrene. The child could not eat anything and was on parenteral nutrition for 3 months. He was listed for a cadaveric small bowel transplant. However , no organ was available. Finally, the medical team at Jupiter Hospital discussed the option of a living donor small intestinal transplant. His father donated a part of his intestine to the child. The surgery was done on 5th November. Both, the father and the child are recovering well.
This is the first pediatric Living Small Intestinal Transplant in Country.
In India, now there is a real hope for survival for patients with intestinal failure, who did not have a treatment option so far.
